COATING THICKNESS GAUGES
Selecting the Correct Coating Thickness Gauge / Paint Thickness GaugE
Selecting a high-quality, accurate coating thickness gauge or paint thickness gauge is essential for quality control. Please take the following into consideration when choosing your thickness gauge:
- Substrate on which you are measuring
- Estimated DFT of coating
- Substrate temperature
- Quality control procedures / paper trail
Different paint thickness gauges are used to measure coating on different substrates. An electromagnetic paint thickness tester e is used to measure coatings on ferrous substrates (steel). A eddy current paint thickness gauge is used to measure coatings on non-ferrous substrates (aluminium). For coatings that need to be measured on non-metal substrates, ultrasonic coating thickness gauges are used.
ABOUT DEFELSKO PAINT THICKNESS TESTERS
Storm Machinery is a proud representative of DeFelsko Inspection instruments and their PosiTector range that includes gauges for measuring coatings on ferrous (steel), non-ferrous (aluminum, copper), concrete, plastics, wood, composites and more. Defelsko’s Powder thickness gauge is even able to measure uncured poweder coatings.
The PosiTector range also includes paint testers and paint thickness gauges that are able to measure coatings on duplex coatings, probes for hot or rugged surfaces, right-angled probes, micro-probes and high range probes that can measure coatings up to 63.5mm.
An advanced PosiTector paint thickness meter is able to store up to 250,000 readings in up to 1,000 batches. These units come with free downloadable software for downloading, archiving, and reporting measurement data. No internet connection required.
Each PosiTector coating thickness gauge comes complete with test block, protective rubber holster, wrist strap, 3 AAA alkaline batteries, instructions, protective carrying case, Long Form Certificate of Calibration traceable to NIST, protective lens shield, USB cable, PosiSoft Software, two (2) year warranty.
All DeFelsko paint thickness testers conform to international standards. All units come complete with a certificate of calibration traceable to NIST. Digital gauges have a large 2.8″ impact resistant color touchscreen with redesigned keypad for quick menu navigation. An on-gauge menu also helps to explains the menu items at the touch of a button.
WHAT IS COATING THICKNESS?
Simply put, coating thickness is the measurement of the coating of paint applied to a substrate. Coating Thickness Gauges, also referred to as dry film thickness gauges (DFT) or paint thickness gauges are an important variable that plays a role in product quality, process control and cost control.
Every paint or coating is supplied with a data sheet which is an ‘instruction manual’ for the coating. Coatings are designed to perform at a certain thickness. The data sheet will stipulate the wet film thickness as well as the dry film thickness the coating should achieve. Even the most basic specification will require the use of a paint thickness tester. Monitoring paint thickness with the correct coating thickness gauge helps ensure the integrity and performance of the paint.
Calibrating a Paint Thickness Gauge
Quality control inspectors generally recommend that a paint thickness gauge be calibrated yearly. Storm Machinery is an authorised DeFelsko Service and Repair Centre and offers repairs and calibrations for each paint gauge purchased.
