ABOUT US

With over 35 years of experience and outlets in all major cities, Storm Machinery has established itself as a leading and innovative supplier of spray painting and abrasive blasting equipment.

Since the assembly of their first blast cabinet in 1990, Storm Machinery has expanded significantly and now offers a wide range of equipment for the construction, contracting, engineering, surface preparation, protective coatings and building industries

Our Story - Built on Grit, Innovation & Solution Development

When Peter started this business back in 1989, it was a classic one-man operation. Operating out of Pinetown, Durban, the focus was simple: supply high-quality abrasive blast cabinets and abrasives to local workshops.

But a funny thing happens when you actually listen to your clients. While working closely with teams re-conditioning air brakes, Peter realized they needed something more specialized. That feedback prompted our very first shift into specialized bead blast cabinets and the opening of our first proper factory.

By 1995, we had outgrown our roots and moved our head office to Boksburg, Johannesburg, to better serve a rapidly expanding market.

From Local Workshop to African Footprint

We quickly realized that standard, off-the-shelf imports didn’t always cut it in harsh African working conditions. So, we started designing and manufacturing our own brand of equipment right here in South Africa.

Being a local manufacturer gave us two massive advantages:

  1. Fairer Pricing: We cut out the heavy import premiums, passing those savings directly to our clients.

  2. Rapid Evolution: When a client told us how a machine handled in the field, we could walk into our workshop and improve the design on the next build.

As our cabinet designs grew popular, we naturally expanded into heavy-duty blast pots, engineering unique safety features and efficiency into every unit. Today, those very designs are trusted by contractors all over the continent.

The Natural Shift into Surface Coating

As our expertise in surface preparation grew, our clients started asking us for the next logical step. They didn’t just want to blast a surface clean; they needed to coat it.

To meet that demand, we expanded our focus to encompass total surface preparation and finishing. We started out in the coating world by supplying reliable conventional spray equipment.

Mastering conventional spray setups opened the doors wide for us to dive even deeper into heavy-duty industrial coatings. It led us directly into the high-performance world of airless spray technology, where we introduced our own unique, custom-designed SX range of pumps and secured the official African distribution for the premium TriTech brand

Milestones of innovation

We don’t innovate just for the sake of it; we innovate to save you time and money on-site. Over the decades, our evolution has hit some incredible high points:

  • 1989 – 1990 | The Spark: Founded as a one-man operation in Pinetown, Durban, focusing entirely on blast cabinets and abrasives.

  • 1995 | The Big Move: Relocated the head office to Boksburg, Johannesburg, to anchor our expanding into blast pots and national supply chain.

  • Completing the Cycle | Blasting to Spraying: Expanded from surface prep into finishing. We mastered conventional spray equipment before launching our proprietary SX airless pump range and partnering with TriTech.

  • DeFelsko Partnership | Guaranteed Quality Control: Moved into inspection instruments by becoming an official distributor for DeFelsko, proudly opening the very first authorized DeFelsko service centre in Africa.

  • Proprietary Engineering | The XP & Low-Pressure Nozzles: Designed our signature XP performance nozzle (blasting 25% faster) and our low-pressure nozzle, which slashes energy use by 35% without dropping performance.

SUPPORTING OUR INDUSTRY

We believe that high-performance equipment is only as good as the knowledge behind it. For decades, the industrial blasting and coating sectors have faced evolving safety regulations, efficiency challenges, and technical hurdles. We don’t just sit behind a desk waiting for you to call. We actively get out into the field to share our expertise.

We regularly host and conduct technical talks and live equipment demonstrations for industry bodies, engineering teams, and large contractors across Africa.

Why we step out of the workshop

  • Hands-on Efficiency Demos: We bring our signature tech (like the XP performance and low-pressure nozzles) directly to facilities to prove how much time, air, and abrasive media can be saved under real-world working conditions.

  • Safety & Compliance Briefings: Surface preparation can be a hazardous game. We speak on standard operating safety protocols, proper blast pot operations, and the vital importance of certified air filtration and respiratory systems.

  • Preventative Maintenance Seminars: Downtime destroys profit margins. Our technical teams run educational sessions for workshop staff, teaching them the early warning signs of equipment wear and how to properly maintain conventional and airless spray systems.

Why choose us?

Investing in surface preparation and finishing equipment is a major decision for your business. You need a partner who understands that every hour of downtime costs you money. We’ve built our entire operation around three core pillars to ensure your project runs smoothly from start to finish:

Unmatched Field Knowledge & Technical Problem Solving

We don’t just sell boxes; we engineer solutions. Our highly trained sales and technical teams bring more than 35 years of hands-on industry experience to the table. We’ve seen almost every blasting and coating challenge imaginable across Africa. Whether you are dealing with complex system architecture, experiencing a sudden drop in blasting pressure, or trying to calculate the exact compressor CFM needed for a new nozzle setup, we provide the technical expertise to solve your problem rapidly.

First-Class Service, Repairs & On-Site Training

To us, the sale is just the beginning. We strive to deliver first-class, end-to-end service across our branches in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. If a machine goes down on-site, our dedicated technical teams are ready to handle fast-turnaround repairs and servicing to keep your project on schedule. Furthermore, we don’t leave your crew guessing – we provide comprehensive training and live demonstrations so your team can operate our systems safely, efficiently, and with total confidence

High-Performance Equipment Built to Last

Industrial environments are brutal on equipment. That is why Storm Machinery only manufactures, imports, and distributes high-quality products designed to perform under the harshest working conditions. From our locally manufactured, unique blast pots and cabinets to premium global brands like TriTech airless sprayers and DeFelsko inspection instruments, we supply gear that delivers maximum efficiency. Our proprietary tech (like the XP performance nozzles) is specifically engineered to blast up to 25% faster while slashing energy consumption, directly improving your bottom line.

Where we are today

We’ve grown from Peter’s one-man shop into a team of passionate industry professionals, with dedicated outlets in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.

But despite the growth, the core philosophy hasn’t changed. We know that buying industrial equipment isn’t a simple checkout transaction – it’s an investment in your livelihood. That’s why we don’t just sell boxes; we back up everything we offer with end-to-end support.
