FAQs
WHAT IS A PNEUMATIC AIRLESS PAINT SPRAYER USED FOR?
We recommend using a pneumatic airless paint sprayer for large-scale industrial projects. Please keep in mind that all pneumatic spray pumps require a compressor.
Pneumatic spray pumps are widely regarded as the workhorse of the corrosion protection industry. These units combine large-capacity fluid sections with powerful air-driven motors to deliver exceptional performance when applying high-viscosity industrial coatings.
Their robust design enables high fluid output, allowing operators to achieve specified Dry Film Thickness (DFT) requirements in significantly reduced time. In addition, the high operating pressures generated by pneumatic systems support extended hose lengths, offering greater flexibility on large-scale industrial projects compared to other airless pump types.
WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC AIRLESS PAINT SPRAYER USED FOR?
We recommend electric spray pumps for difficult to reach areas (roof spray) , decorative and waterproofing applications. Larger electric models are capable of handling higher-viscosity coatings.
Electric spray pumps are powered by high-output electric motors and are valued for their compact design and versatility. Their smaller form factor allows operators to access confined or difficult-to-reach areas more easily than many other airless pump systems.
Typically fitted with smaller fluid sections, electric pumps are well suited to decorative and fine finishing applications. However, larger electric models are fully capable of handling higher-viscosity coatings. Electric spray pumps are particularly popular for waterproofing applications, as their relatively lightweight construction—often comparable to the weight of a 20-litre bucket of coating—enables operators to transport both pump and material efficiently, including rooftop work environments.
Storm Machinery is an authorised distributor for TriTech Industries.
WHAT IS A HYDRAULIC AIRLESS SPRAY PUMPS USED FOR?
We recommend hydraulic spray pumps for large-scale site establishment and heavy-duty industrial projects. These units are self-contained and powered by integrated diesel or petrol engines, eliminating the need for an external compressed air supply or electrical power source.
Equipped with large-capacity fluid sections, hydraulic systems are capable of handling a broad spectrum of coating materials, ranging from high-build corrosion protection products to decorative and waterproofing applications. Their durability, power, and independence from external utilities make them a preferred choice for demanding and remote job sites
HOW DOES AN AIRLESS SPRAY MACHINE WORK?
An airless spray machine operates on an airless principle and use pressure, instead of air, to atomize paint. The high pressure forces fluid through the hose assembly and out through a small opening, called the orifice, or spray tip.
WHAT IS PUMP RATIO?
We describe pneumatic pump ratio as the relationship between the effective area of the air piston and the effective area of the pump’s fluid piston.
When a pump ratio is 1:1, the pressure applied at the motor will develop the same amount of fluid pressure when the fluid outlet is closed.
The pump ratio changes when the same size air motor is used with different size fluid piston pumps.
Size your airless pump correctly to supply the required flow rate to one or multiple guns. If the sizing is not adequate atomisation will not take place. Guns need 80 – 150 bar fluid pressure to atomize. Please keep in mind that the coatings volume solids and viscosity affects the pressure.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF AIRLESS SPRAY PUMPS?
An airless paint sprayer offers multiple advantages for all aspects of a demanding coating application.
- Airless paint machines are mobile and are easily transported between job sites. This makes them ideal for both outdoor and indoor projects.
- An airless spray machine is robust and durable. New models have dynamic air motors and anti-freeze designs.
- Airless spray pumps offer a 60 to 90% higher transfer efficiency than conventional spray. This limits overspray and helps save money on costly paint.
- Airless machines spray a thicker coat of material with each single pass. This speeds up the spray application resulting in less labour and faster production lines.
- When used by skilled operators, airless sprayers produce an even coat of paint on all types of surfaces, leaving a high quality finish.
- An airless sprayer is fast! It is able to spray up to half a square meter per second (depending on the spray tip size).
- No solvents needed! Spray paint directly out of the tin with no need for solvents.
WHY ARE PAINT DATA SHEETS IMPORTANT?
A paint data sheet will specify which type of spray painting equipment you will require.
We cannot stress the importance of paint data sheets enough. Please ensure that you are familiar with your paint product data sheet when selecting any airless spray equipment. Correct equipment selection prevents costly down-time and paint wastage. Please ask our sales team for help should any confusion arise. Before spraying you should be familiar with the following:
- The volume solids for wet dry thickness (WFT)
- Know the paint’s viscosity (the ability of paint to flow in a hose)
- Know the paint’s pot life / gel time. From a practical perspective, you will half the pot life with every 5 degrees (Celsius) then the spec on the paint data sheet. For instance, if a paint’s pot life is 1 hour at 20 degrees, the pot life will shorten to 30 minutes if the temperature increases to 25 degrees.
ARE AIRLESS SPRAY MACHINES & AIRLESS SPRAY GUNS DIFFICULT TO OPERATE?
No. However, an airless paint sprayer should only be handed by trained personnel.
Because of the high pressure of an airless spray machine projects should be approached with caution. Put sufficient safety measures in place when operating these units. Additionally, please ensure that your operator makes use of the correct PPE.
Before using an spray pump please ensure that you are familiar with the paint product you are using. The material itself is the primary hazard when painting. Painting may expose you potentially dangerous chemicals which may damage your health
Sprayer paint technique is essential for achieving the correct finish. Incorrect application of paint products can result in costly coating failures and project delays. Storm Machinery offers OEM training for spray units purchased directly from any of our branches.
HOW DO I SELECT A SPRAY TIP FOR MY AIRLESS SPRAY GUN?
Your paint data sheet will indicate which size spray tip you will need for your airless spray gun. The size of the spray tip is usually dependent on the product being sprayed.
WHAT IS SPRAY GUN TECHNIQUE?
Please ensure that all operators are sufficiently trained and able to utilize the correct spray technique. Incorrect spray technique can result in multiple coating failures despite the paint quality and equipment used.
Coating failures from poor spray technique can include the following:
- Sagging/running
- Dry spray / overspray
- Orange peel / texture finish
- Pinholes / holidays / solvent popping
- Fisheyes
- Wrinkling
Storm Machinery offers OEM in-house training for all equipment purchased. Please feel free to contact our sales team for more information
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF AIRLESS SPRAY GUNS
The main advantage of airless spray guns is that they offer a wide range of spray tips allowing the user to easily adjust their fan pattern. Airless spray guns also have large fluid passages and easily accessible filters. In addition, a gun extension can be fitted to an airless spray gun for spraying hard-to-reach areas.
DO YOU OFFER EQUIPMENT REPAIRS & SERVICING?
Yes. Storm Machinery services and repairs all equipment we sell. Please contact our sales team for more information.
